I mentioned in a previous post that Maddox had been to the Dr. and that we had been referred on to an ENT for his "breathing issues". Here is why..... when Maddox was about 3 weeks old I noticed that he kind of struggled breathing and would wheeze at different times, especially when eating or when he was upset and crying. Because of this I was concerned that he might have asthma or terrible allergies so I asked the Dr. about it at his 1 month appoint. I have some similar problems that are bothersome when I laugh or work out.
Last week we finally got in and were able to confirm that he does have Laryngomalacia. Basically what this means is that his larynx is soft and floppy which can create problems (a.k.a loud breathing). Though this isn't something super serious at this point (and shouldn't become an issue) we were told he is at a "higher" risk for SIDS. Because of this we now have to keep him on a monitor when he is sleeping in his crib. It monitors his breathing and his heart rate and will go off should either stop or slow down to a dangerous level. The Dr. said she would keep him on it for the next 6 months or so. On top of this he also does have some reflux that is creating irritation to his laryngomalacia so we are giving him small doses of Prevacid to settle his tummy.
In order to confirm the diagnosis we had to have x-rays taken and he had to have a scope done. Justin took him back for the x-rays without me and apparently he screamed through some of them. After that we took him to the specialists office where they did the scope. That was TERRIBLE for a mommy to watch. The nurse held him down and the Dr. literally shoved the scope down his nose and throat which of course he screamed and bawled through. Definitely not something a mommy (or daddy) wants to be a part of. I, of course, cried right along with him but what else could I do!?
Through all of this Maddox has remained the happy baby that he is and, nothing really seems to phase him which has been great! The good news is that he will grow out of this within a year or two so, until then, we will just have to deal with a loud breather and I see no problem with that! :)
